Counter-Driven Regression for Label Inference in Atlas- Based Segmentation
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a novel method for inferring tissue labels in atlasbased image segmentation using Gaussian process regression. Atlas-based segmentation results in probabilistic label maps that serve as input to our method. We introduce a contour-driven prior distribution over label maps to incorporate image features of the input scan into the label inference problem. The mean function of the Gaussian process posterior distribution yields the MAP estimate of the label map and is used in the subsequent voting. We demonstrate improved segmentation accuracy when our approach is combined with two different patch-based segmentation techniques. We focus on the segmentation of parotid glands in CT scans of patients with head and neck cancer, which is important for radiation therapy planning.

متن کاملShape-constrained multi-atlas based segmentation with multichannel registration
Multi-atlas based segmentation methods have recently attracted much attention in medical image segmentation. The multi-atlas based segmentation methods typically consist of three steps, including image registration, label propagation, and label fusion. Most of the recent studies devote to improving the label fusion step and adopt a typical image registration method for registering atlases to th...
متن کاملComparison of state-of-the-art atlas-based bone segmentation approaches from brain MR images for MR-only radiation planning and PET/MR attenuation correction
Introduction: Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging has emerged as a valuable tool in radiation treatment (RT) planning as well as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging owing to its superior soft-tissue contrast. Due to the fact that there is no direct transformation from voxel intensity in MR images into electron density, itchr('39')s crucial to generate a pseudo-CT (Computed Tomography) image ...
متن کاملAtlas-Based Under-Segmentation
We study the widespread, but rarely discussed, tendency of atlas-based segmentation to under-segment the organs of interest. Commonly used error measures do not distinguish between under- and over-segmentation, contributing to the problem. We explicitly quantify over- and under-segmentation in several typical examples and present a new hypothesis for the cause. We provide evidence that segmenti...
متن کاملMulti-atlas labeling with population-specific template and non-local patch-based label fusion
We propose a new method combining a population-specific nonlinear template atlas approach with non-local patch-based structure segmentation for whole brain segmentation into individual structures. This way, we benefit from the efficient intensity-driven segmentation of the non-local means framework and from the global shape constraints imposed by the nonlinear template matching.
